My Experience With Keto for BJJ

The ketogenic diet is really hot right now for weight loss, health, disease prevention and longevity.

And in early 2018 as I was getting ready for my 1000 mile solo trip in the Arctic I gave it a really serious try.

(This is because on a per calorie basis fat weighs half as much as protein and carbohydrate.  Which means that if keto had been successful for me then I would have been able to shave 50 or 60 pounds from my load, which would have been super helpful.)

Anyway, in my monthlong test I was doing all the right things.  Severely cutting down on my sugars and carbohydrates, making sure I was in ketosis most of the day, guzzling coconut milk for breakfast, eating tons of fatty meats, and adding cream to everything.

I felt alright during most of that month.

My energy levels were fine.

My joints felt great.

And, most importantly, my jiu-jitsu continued to improve.

But biochemically keto was an absolute disaster for me!

When your doctor calls you in a panic then you find out that, like with all diets, individual results may vary.

Basically every single one of my blood lipid numbers (LDL, the LDL to HDL ratio, Triglycerides, etc) had taken a giant in the wrong direction.  Like the drop-dead-from-a-heart-attack-at-age-50 wrong direction.

I’m not saying it’s bad for everyone, but if you try it then please, Please, PLEASE, MAKE SURE YOU DO BLOODWORK BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER.

(Yes, I know I’m yelling, but it’s that important).

The bottomline is that which can be measured can be improved.

This episode is a quick summary of what I ate, how my energy changed, and how my bloodwork went absolutely crazy on the ketogenic diet.
