The bout between boxing legends Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr. won’t be the all-out battle many fans were hoping for, but the exhibition fight will still provide great entertainment this weekend for anyone excited to see these two back in the ring.
Tyson, 54, hasn’t fought since 2005, but rumors of his return (including a $20 million offer from the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship) have been swirling for months. His fight against Jones will not be a traditional sanctioned one, however — there will be no official scoring, no winner, and no loser.
California State Athletic Commission executive director Andy Foster told MMA Fighting that the World Boxing Council will have “guest celebrity judges” working remotely, but that there will be no official scoring for the fight, adding that the bout is designed for the purpose of entertainment rather than competition.
The bout will consist of eight rounds, with each round lasting two minutes. Tyson and Jones won’t be required to wear headgear, and will be wearing 12-ounce gloves. Both fighters have undergone full medical testing and were tested by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency, and if either of them gets a bad cut in the bout, the fight will end.
Regardless of the rules, this should be an exciting event that will showcase the skills of two of boxing’s most legendary athletes.
Mike Tyson vs. Roy Jones Jr. will take place November 28. The PPV can be purchased here for $49.99.
